Business Over Politics is about...

…companies that focus on product and service excellence instead of engaging with political or social issues. And it’s about companies that want their customers and employees to feel respected and welcomed—regardless of their political affiliation or personal views.

That’s it.

The benefits of companies prioritizing respect, inclusivity, and excellence in business include:

• Healthier workplaces

• A less divisive culture

• More loyal customers

• A stronger economy

And that is why the majority of customers, employees, executives, and shareholders prefer companies that focus on their core mission and do not engage in political or social issues nor discriminate against customers or employees based on their political affiliation, social views, or religion.

Every company has the responsibility to make a choice:

Option 1

A company can focus exclusively on providing the best products and services for customers and a great place for employees to work. Generally, this provides the best opportunity for contributing to the satisfaction, respect, and well-being of their customers and employees, which in turn contributes to a strong business.

Option 2

A company can choose to use its business platform to promote political or social issues unrelated to its business (on either side of the political spectrum), as long as they are transparent about it and willing to accept the limitations that come with it. These actions will likely result in losing once loyal customers and talented employees who hold different views, and less innovation and diversity within the company.

Private vs. Public Companies

When private companies choose the second option—engaging in political or social advocacy—they do so knowing that it could hurt the business by alienating customers and/or employees. That is the prerogative of business owners.

However, when publicly traded companies do so, they have the additional responsibility of representing the best interests of shareholders, who have a vested interest in the well-being of customers and employees. All too often, public companies are taking stands that alienate people and hurt their businesses, without regard to the financial impact on shareholders. Regardless of whether a company chooses to engage in a conservative-leaning or progressive-leaning issue, it is unethical if not done with transparency and the well-being of the company in mind.

Truly welcoming and inclusive business environments are created by companies that choose not to engage in divisive social or political issues.

They focus on their core business and demonstrate genuine respect for their diverse customers and employees.

What people want from companies

Most people agree that our society has important social and political issues that require robust debate and solutions. However, the appropriate places for these debates and advocacy are in the civic and public spaces, not the workplace or retail environment.

The latest surveys and data show that the majority of people want companies to focus on their core business—not political activism.
